Kilmer Middle School is a technology-rich school with SmartBoards in every classroom, 5 stand-alone computer labs, and 18 mobile laptap carts. We have iPads, Turning Point and Senteo Response Systems, Flip Video Cameras, digital still cameras, Airliner Wireless Slates, along with other tools for our teaching staff to make use of during instruction. Our school is committed to using FCPS 24/7 Learning (formerly Blackboard) to make syllibi, homework, and other instructional materials available to our students electronically. Beginning in 2011, we also began implementation of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program in which parents are encouraged to allow their students to register and bring in their personally owned laptops, netbooks tablets, and smartphones to school for authorized instrcutional use.
Our school has a Vanguard Team of faculty who support technology use in instruction, led by Brian Herberger, our School-Based Technology Specialist. One current technology initiative, spear-headed by Mr. Herberger, is providing Google Apps in Education to our students, offering access to Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Gmail, both at school and at home, all within a secure FCPS environment.
We regularly provide professional development opportunities to our staff in an effort to keep teachers up-to-date and comfortable with incorporating technology into their instructional practices.
