Research Assignment -- The Executive Branch

On any news program or in any newspaper, you will hear about our Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense.  Who are these people?  What do they do for our nation?  Using the websites provided and your Civics Textbook, we will answer these questions!

First, you need to choose a partner to work with on the computer.  You then need to sign up for an Executive Department or an EOP Office to research.  (See Mrs. Turner for the list.)  You will be researching the information with a partner, but you will be turning in your own paper.

Next, you need to research the following information on the computer...

1. Define the cabinet.  When did it form?  Who nominates the cabinet members?  Who approves the nomination?

2. List all 15 executive departments.  Explain why the executive departments are necessary.  How do they report to the president?

3. Research one department or agency.  This is the department you signed up for in the beginning of class.  For this department, you need to research the following information...

a.  When was it formed?
b.  What types of duties does it carry out?  What type of issues  does it deal with?
c.  Give one example of an event or an issue that the department or EOP office has dealt with?
d.  Who did Bush appoint to this department or office?
e.  One interesting fact about your department or office.

Finally, you will put all this information into an essay.  The essay must be typed or neatly written.  You must cite all the websites your use.  (As you research each website, write down its URL.)  At the end of your essay, you must add a bibliography.

This assignment is worth 100 points and will be counted as a quiz grade.  The final essay will be due on _____________.
