KEY BAND GRADING POLICY AND DESIGN

40% Playing tests, written tests, pop quizzes.

Students will be tested on their knowledge of information learned in class:  scales, method books, sheet music, rhythm exercises, vocabulary, technique, musical expression, critical thinking.  In addition, some playing tests will also be used to determine the most productive seating arrangement for the ensemble.  Grades given on tests are A, B+, B, or "do over".  If a student is asked to do a test over, they are given additional time (usually a week) to prepare music/fix mistakes and get help from the teacher.  When students take a test a second time, grades given are A, B+, B, or F.  This practice encourages students to sufficiently prepare their individual performance by allowing extra time and help if needed, while holding them accountable to the ensemble's performance readiness.
30% Performance grades at concerts/festivals.
Our "final exams!"  The grade is based on individual and ensemble playing, punctual attendance, correct uniform, professionalism and decorum, and ratings received at adjudicated events.  Students unable to attend a required performance due to extenuating circumstances (sudden illness, car accident, death in family, etc.) should provide the director with a parent-signed note the next available day, and be prepared to perform their concert music in front of a video camera, to be evaluated as a test grade by the director.  Students without a reasonable excuse for the absence or who do not complete the follow-up videotaping will receive an F and will be ineligible to attend the Spring Trip in June.
20% Rehearsal skills.
Prepared for class (has instrument, music, reeds, etc.); following conductorÕs cues and instructions, proper posture and hand positions, embouchures, counting skills, attendance at after-school rehearsals.  Time spent in rehearsal is crucial to a band's ability to perform, therefore, students are expected to understand that being a member of the band means not only being responsible for yourself, but for the welfare of the entire ensemble.  Band students fulfill this responsibility by preparing their music to the best of their ability, and contributing their utmost attention and professional qualities at each and every rehearsal.

10% Practice card.

There are no short cuts, no magic tricks: to be a good player, you have to practice a lot!  (click here to get some good practice tips) Practice cards are due every Monday, signed by parent or guardian.  Practice cards turned in later that one week will not be accepted.  It is the student's responsibility to turn in practice cards on time, not the parent or the teacher!  Time spent in private lessons can be recorded on practice cards.  The weekly grade is based on the amount of time spent practicing that week.  The grade range is as follows:
A   210 min. per week (extra credit for more than 225)
B+ 195-209 min. per week
B   180-194 min. per week
C+165-179 min. per week
C   150-164 min. per week
D+135-149 min. per week
D   120-134 min. per week
F    less than 120 min./week, but partial credit is given for minimal practice time.  Better than not turning in any practice time at all!
