You will play challenging new music and experience playing under another conductor.
You will work hard, and you will have fun doing it!

"What do I have to play on the audition?"
9 major scales from memory, the chromatic scale from memory, a prepared piece of music (looking) and a few lines of sight reading.  Mr. Jakes has a copy of everything you need. Look here for Hints.
"How do I register to audition?"
Complete and return the registration form.  Attach a $4.00 check made out to Key Band, or enclose cash.  Return to Mr. Jakes by Monday, November 13.  The fee is non-refundable if you don’t show.  You may register late (until November 26) but the fee goes up to $8.00.  You may not register the morning of the event!
"Where and when is the audition?"
Saturday, December 9, 2000 at Mt. Vernon High School.  After our registration is sent in, the audition chairman will schedule specific audition times for each student.  These times will be available to Mr. Jakes (usually) 2 weeks before the audition.
"How many people will they take in the Honor Band?"
It changes a little bit every year.  Last year they accepted:

1 Piccolo, 14 Flutes, 3 Oboes, 3 Bassoons, 25 Clarinets, 1 Eb Alto Clarinet, 4 Bass Clarinets, 1 Contralto Clarinet, 5 Alto Saxes, 2 Tenor Saxes, 2 Baritone Saxes, 15 Trumpets, 8 French Horns,  9 Trombones, 5 Euphoniums, 6 Tubas, 6 Percussion

"Can the two judges see me when I perform?"

No, they will sit behind a screen, and they will refer to you by your audition number only.  In fact, you will be told not to talk so that they can’t even identify your voice!  However, there will be a student "helper" in the room that can answer questions for you.
"What will be required of me if I make the Band?"
You must be able to attend all of the following activities at Hayfield High School:
Thursday evening, February 1, 2001 - music reading session
Friday, February 2, 2001 - attend rehearsals from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, you will miss school that day so you may have to make up any schoolwork.
Saturday, February 3, 2001 - rehearse in the morning and afternoon, and perform a      concert that evening.  Then you’re done!
You must be able to represent our school with pride and good behavior.
IMPORTANT!  If you find out after the audition that you can’t participate in the Honor Band, tell Mr. Jakes immediately so that he can notify the District Chairperson to find an alternate.  That way, the next person in line gets a chance to play.
