Let's Chat!
Key Center has launched an important new initiative that we call Let's Chat. This initiative is spearheaded by our speech department in collaboration with our Assistive Technology Resource Teacher. As part of this initiative, we have provided every classroom with a "tool kit" of assistive technology to encourage the students to communicate by whatever means they are capable of as often as possible. Each classroom received some type of click switch or switch interfaced - once connected, the switch operates as a left mouse click and can be used with many software programs. A switch can also operate a device such as a toy, camera, pair of scissors, etc. The classrooms also received a "twin talk" device a portable voice output communication device with 2 message cells to allow them to make choices by selecting between two alternatives; a Bigmac or Partner Plus- which is single message voice output communication device; a Step by Step device - a portable, multilevel voice output communication device with one message per level which allows for serial communication; and the Boardmaker Plus program - a database containing Picture Communication Symbols that allows users to create custom visuals and includes templates for communication devices, calendars, and schedules. Some of the devices are pictured below.
Another facet of this intiative is called "Mouthing Off". Key Center is committed to extending and facilitating communication beyond the classroom into the halls of the school and into the community as well. Communication devices are placed throughout the school and with various staff members to allow everyone an opportunity to chat with the students. Staff members were trained in how to use the devices and are encouraged to carry devices with them as they move around the school. When the speech staff "catches" someone communicating they receive an incentive coupon. Key Center is Working Together to give every child a voice.
