A few years ago we had each student make their own calendar and at the end of the school year they were able to take it home to use for the following school year. It was a great way to display their projects as well as sending home a practical gift to our parents/guardians. I would like to do the same this year. We actually selected students' artwork and created a "Master calendar" that was reproduced and then we were able to sell them as a fundraiser as well as advertise KEY CENTER SCHOOL and our students capabilities! We also took some of our students artwork and created greeting cards. Key Center School's mission statement is printed on the back of each card and our students actually count the cards and envelopes, and then package them for another fundraising activity. They are quite popular - especially during our holiday season! It's a fantastic way to display our students masterpieces!
During ART, we will naturally work on communication skills such as choice making, attending to tasks, following simple 1 to 2 step directions, etc. Each calendar month, I like to change the media we use (i.e. tempera paints, watercolors, oil pastels). So, we will be using a variety of mediums, textures (feathers, pom pom balls, bubble wrap), and themes (fall, winter, beach). It should be a fun year and I invite all of you to join your class when time allows to see what your students are working on.
