Mission Statement
The mission of Washington Irving Middle School is to ensure all students’ intellectual, social and personal growth in a nurturing learning environment through a rigorous yet diversified curriculum. Our goal is to prepare students for the twenty-first century by instilling academic aspirations, promoting positive social qualities, and guiding them to be self-reliant and responsible individuals.
Philosophy and Objectives
Irving's motto is “Building a Community of Learners.” It was developed by Irving students and reflects the high academic expectations that the professional staff has made part of the school’s fine reputation and tradition. Faculty and staff members continue to provide an appropriate standards-based curriculum that meets the educational needs of all students in preparing them to be lifelong learners.
In order to achieve this goal, Irving ensures a safe and nurturing learning environment that stimulates intellectual curiosity, academic aspiration, and higher order thinking skills. The school adheres to the middle school philosophy, and students are assigned to core academic teams where academic excellence, positive personal qualities, and self-reliant skills are stressed.
Teachers foster respect for individual differences and provide encouragement to ensure that all students are able to achieve at the highest levels. A strong guidance program promotes positive elements of the school’s diverse student population.
Emphasis is placed on preparing students for the rigors of high school courses and higher educational learning experiences for postsecondary education.
Parents and students are encouraged to begin developing and planning the various educational opportunities that their children will be able to explore in the near future. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of co-curricular and extracurricular activities to become involved in programs beyond the regular school day.
