Hunt Valley Elementary School was completed in 1969 and underwent renovation which was completed in 1996. The school serves approximately 600 children in kindergarten through grade six.  Our school has an autism program, a learning disabilities program, and an ESOL program.

Children's needs are a top priority at Hunt Valley where a learning environment with high expectations for all students is maintained. Hunt Valley Elementary is filled with dedicated professionals who work exceptionally hard to educate our children and prepare them to effectively meet the challenges of the future.

Our theme this year is, Building Our Future, One Child at a Time.  Grade level teams meet each week to discuss individual student achievement.  They focus on helping each child be successful through the use of a variety of educational best practices.  Critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration are integral parts of the curriculum in all academic areas. The development of responsibility and respect for self, others, and the community are school-wide priorities. Acceptance of cultural diversity and a positive school climate continue to be emphasized.

We offer a wide variety of before, during and after school activities that build well-rounded students.  Activities include Junior Great Books, FLEX Language Program, Homework Club, Enrichment opportunities in reading and math, Compacted Math in grades 3-6, Greenspring Village Mentor Program, Sixth Grade Chorus, Band, Strings, Peer Mediation, SCA, Patrols, School Newspaper, Chess Club, after-school Drama and Sports opportunities, and more.

Hunt Valley is one of twenty-two schools in Fairfax County that has a Teacher Leadership Development Grant.  Fourteen Hunt Valley teachers have extended year contracts to investigate methods to better educate our diverse population of learners throughout the summer months.  Our grant, “Literacy for All”, focuses on Reading Literacy, Math Literacy, Visual Literacy and Time to Teach.  During July and August our Reading Literacy group hosted a bi-weekly Summer Take Home Reading Program for rising first and second grade students.  Participating students received twenty leveled books every two weeks to independently read at home.  On book exchange days, each student spent time reading with a teacher.  Students who participated in the program maintained or increased reading skills over the summer.  The Math Literacy group created math manipulative carts for all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms.  The carts contain focus lessons, activities, games, and manipulatives needed to reinforce number and number sense concepts taught at each grade level.  Teachers will use the lessons and materials during the year in their daily lessons to strengthen math understanding with their students.  The Visual Literacy group created review games, hands-on small group activities, powerpoint slide shows with embedded videos, and artifact boxes for use in teaching 4th grade Virginia History and 6th grade U.S. History lessons.  Teachers in fourth and sixth grade will be integrating these materials into their lessons this year.  The Time to Teach group created the school’s master schedule which focuses on uninterrupted instructional blocks to maximize teaching and learning time.  Each teacher received their weekly instructional schedule that protects instructional blocks of time and provides time for grade level teams to meet with specialists once a week throughout the year during the school day as professional learning communities.

The Hunt Valley community is always invited to take an active part in school activities. Parents and volunteers are welcome at school and encouraged to assist in the classrooms and with special events. Teachers and parents are united in their belief that it takes everyone working together to educate our children.  Hunt Valley is a very special school. All of us feel privileged to be part of this wonderful school community.
