Band at Hunt Valley Elementary School
We are so fortunate to have band programs in elementary school in Fairfax County. Students in grades five and six may receive lessons on band instruments during the school day. Aside from the obvious benefits of playing a music instrument, there are a number of surprising academic benefits to students who study music. Students who take lessons on an instrument at a young age stimulate the brain in a unique way. Studies have shown that learning to play an instrument enhances a student's academic performance in math, language arts, foreign language and other academic areas. Even standardized test scores are higher among musicians. Playing an instrument can bring joy and fulfillment like no other activity. It is both challenging and fun!
At Hunt Valley, band students will perform at a variety of functions. Band students in their second year of playing will have the opportunity of playing for Veteran’s Day and at The Winter Extravaganza, a winter holiday assembly. Auditions for Area Honor Band will be held in December and these rehearsals begin in January. The West Springfield Area Honor Band will have a concert in April. Solo and Ensemble Festival is held in April also. This event allows both beginning and advanced band students to prepare a solo and perform it for a judge who gives them comments, a rating, and an awards medal. The Hunt Valley Band (both first and second year players) will perform in concert in May. It is going to be a great year!
