Team Comets Heads to the Woods!
Almost all the members of Team Comets headed to the woods on a beautiful fall day recently to learn a little more about the area in which we live. On a sunny warm Wednesday, October 15, all of Team Comets students could be seen making the nearly two-mile march from our school to Glade Stream Valley Park nearby. They were accompanied on the walk by our fearless social studies and math teachers, Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Beckley and a number of our wonderful parent volunteers. Meeting them at the park were Ms. White and Mrs. Belvin, our Science and English teachers who had gone ahead to help set up. At the park, students were led in a number of activities by employee volunteers from the United States Geological Survey whose web address is http://www.usgs.gov/.
At each of nine stations, students learned about such topics as biological diversity, water chemistry, mapping, writing poetry in the haiku and cinquain forms, scientific drawing and the history of Reston. Some students were even treated with the opportunity of meeting Reston’s founder, Robert E. Simon, who joined us for a bit. See some of our students above pictured with Mr. Simon.
After going to each of the nine stations, students ate a picnic lunch at the nearby basketball court. Everyone agreed that it was a perfect way to spend a lovely fall day. Thanks to all who made this field trip possible.
