Procedures at the Hughes Library
EQUIPMENT:
All equipment must be checked out to an individual staff member.
Televisions: Most classrooms have ceiling-mounted televisions and VCRs. Additional VCRs and televisions are available in the library and must be checked out. Please report problems with televisions to the library right away. In some cases, we can solve the problem. In other cases, someone will be sent to Hughes to make the necessary repairs. There have been county-wide problems with the Earthwalk televisions and they are being replaced when they can no longer be repaired as funds permit. Remotes must be checked out of the library at the beginning of the school year and returned at the end of the school year.
VCRs: Most classrooms have VCRs with their televisions. We have extra VCRs that can be checked out as needed. Please be extra careful with the VCRs as the county is no longer repairing them when they break. Using the remote will extend the life of an average VCR as it is the STOP/EJECT button that often fails. VCR remotes are checked out with television remotes.
Overhead Projectors: Overheads and their carts are checked out at the beginning of the school year. Extra bulbs are available in the library. Please send the old bulb when requesting a replacement so that we know which type to send in its place. Extra OHPs are available as these fail. If an overhead fails, please tell us exactly what is wrong so that we can report the problem to the contractor who makes the repairs.
Boom Boxes: A limited number of Boom Boxes are available to be checked out for the school year. Some can play CDs and others cannot. Several Boom Boxes will be kept in the library to be checked out on an as-needed basis. Please reserve these in the library. There is a form on the wall behind the librarian's desk.
Camcorders: We have 2 camcorders that can be checked out on an as-needed basis. Please reserve these in the library. There is a form on the wall behind the librarian's desk.
Digital Cameras: We have several digital cameras that can be checked out on an as-needed basis. Please reserve these in the library. There is a form on the wall behind the librarian's desk.
USING THE LIBRARY:
Individual Student Use: Teachers may send up to 4 students at a time to work independently in the library. STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PASS TO USE THE LIBRARY IF THEY ARE NOT WITH A CLASS. We will provide library passes. Please let us know what you expect the student to accomplish in the library. For students you trust to avoid goofing off, this is not necessary. Use your judgment. Since there is only one librarian, try not to send students who have not already had an introductory lesson. We will try to work with students if we are not busy with a class.
Computers: We have 12 desktop and 8 laptop computers in the library for student use. All but 2 desktop computers can access the network. These computers are reserved for use by classes. The computer closest to the faculty lounge door is reserved for teachers. All of the programs needed by teachers are available on this computer.
Telephone: All classrooms now have telephones, but teachers occasionally need to use a different phone. The librarian's phone can be used if necessary. Please ask.
Classroom Use: The IBMYP calls for frequent use of the library, so we are a busy place. Therefore, teachers must sign up in advance. Please try to talk to the librarian or library assistant before signing up. If we are not available, it is OK to pencil in your name on the desired date. We can accommodate 2 classrooms in the library at one time. We also require a copy of the assignment in order to use the library. In fact, it is best to meet with the librarian before designing the assignment as she may have ideas and suggestions for a more effective assignment. The library is reserved during the first two weeks of the school year for library orientation.
Librarian Visits: The librarian may choose to offer a lesson in a classroom for several reasons. First, the library would remain available for use by classes where the students have already had several lessons. Second, the smaller size of the classroom means fewer distractions, and this can be beneficial in a number of cases. Third, the lighting in classrooms may be more conducive to Smart Board use. Fourth, there are only 18 computers available for student use in the library. Technology is increasingly important in libraries and it may be necessary to meet in the lab.
After-School Student Library Use: The library will be open after school for student use on Mondays and Thursdays. In the past, students have been required to have a pass from a Core teacher in order to use the library. This will not be necessary unless serious problems develop. Students will be expected to work or read quietly and volunteer opportunities will be offered to those who just don't want to go home and need something to do. The library is a better and safer place to be after school than many other places, but loud, rude, cruel, and disruptive behavior will not be allowed. If you have projects that can be handled by students with limited supervision, let the librarian know.
After-School Library Use by Teachers: To avoid conflict, we need to know in advance if you need to use the library after school. Please sign up in advance.
USING THE LIBRARY COLLECTION:
Library Organization: Library materials are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System, which should be familiar to students. Our library has the following sections: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Short Story, Books-On-Tape/CD, Foreign Language Books, Quick Reads (easier titles), Reference, Professional Collection; Periodicals, Audiovisuals.
Checkout Period: Teachers may check out library materials, including books and videos, for as long as they are needed. Remember that others in the school will need these items and return them as soon as they are no longer needed. All books, videos, and DVDs must be checked out. We need to know where to find things when they are needed by other teachers.
Reserve Books: If books are needed for an assignment, we can pull them and place them on reserve for use by your students. The cart will be labeled with your name. These books will be set aside for use in the library. Students will not be able to check out these books while they are on reserve. The reserve period will be determined by the teacher and the librarian.
Books on Tape: We have a small collection of Books on Tape or CD. Students and teachers may check out these books. If your voice fails when reading aloud, take a look at our collection. They are located at the end of the Fiction section.
Audiovisual Material: The use of audiovisual material in FCPS is too complicated to cover in a single paragraph. Click on Supplemental Instructional Material for information on this topic.
Purchase Requests: Please let us know when you come across an item that you think we should order for the Hughes library. The ordering process takes time, so plan ahead. We do have some discretionary income for emergencies.
