Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. What are "Supplemental Instructional Material?"

A. They are videotapes, videodiscs, audiotapes, audiodiscs, CD, and DVDs that are not part of the official instructional materials provided for use for specificcourses.

Q. What are the rules for using these items?

A. Teachers may use only those items that have been approved for the topic/grade level of the class for which it is to be used.

Q. How is supplemental instructional media approved?

A. It can be approved at the county level by the appropriate departmental office or at an individual school by the Supplemental Instructional Materials Review Committee.

Q. How do I know if an item in the Hughes collection is approved?

A. Approved items in the Hughes collection have either an "AIM" or a "VREF" sticker. This means they are approved for use in some course at Hughes, but it doesn't mean they can be used in any course. Use the library's catalog for specific information. Type in the name of the video. Click on "see more" and scroll down to "audience" to see if your grade level/subject are listed.

Q. What about all of the PBS videos with the "Prof" sticker.

A. Most of the PBS videos have now been approved for use at the middle school level. We are in the process of changing the labels. Until the new labels are attached, use the library catalog for approval informationl.

Q. Is there another source of approved instructional media in FCPS?

A. Yes. FCPS has an extensive collection of videos and DVDs that can be checked out for use by in the classroom. The booking procedure is new, so we are still fine-tuning ordering procedures. Please see Ms. Noble or Ms. Peters if you would like to check out an item from the Electronic Media Library. It takes at least 3 days to receive this material, so plan ahead.

Q. Is all of the material in the Electronic Media Library approved.

A. It is all approved for use by specific courses at specific grade levels. Use the library catalog for audience details.

Q. How do I find appropriate and approved instructional material?

A. Use the library catalog to look up approved material. Set the Library to "Electronic Media Library" or "All". Search by grade level (007 or 008) and subject. See the librarian for assistance.

Q. What if I want to have something approved?

A. Submit an "Attachment A" to the librarian, who will submit it to the Supplemental Instructional Materials Review Committee. These forms are available in the library or on page 5 at Regulation 3007.1

Q. Can I show a video I rent or bring from home?

A. Yes - if it is approved. The Copyright Law demands that any item show in a classroom must be for instructional use. If you are using an approved item in the appropriate manner, then you're OK.

Q. What type of material can be approved?

A. In order to be approved for use in FCPS, electronic media must be shown to support the POS. Items with a PG or PG-13 rating require "advance written notification to parents." R rated material cannot be used in middle schools.

Q. A friend who works at Carson says a video is approved at her school. Does that mean it is approved at Hughes?

A. No. If it was approved locally for use at another middle school, it still needs to be approved at Hughes. As your friend to send a copy of the Attachment A (It should be in her library) to help you out.

Q. Can I tape TV shows and use them?

A. Yes, but they need to be approved and can only be retained for a specific period. See the librarian for details.

Q. Are all of the shows aired on FCPS channels approved?

A. Shows on channel 21 are all approved. Most of the others are approved as well.
