Pathfinder: Emergency Preparedness

Step 1: Define your task: Look at the assignment/essential question. Consider keywords and write them here:

Step 2: What materials might be useful for the project? Articles in Online Databases, Websites.

Step 3: Find the material.

• Online Databases: Try a power search in Gale using keywords listed above.
• Websites: There is a great deal of information on the Internet about disaster planning and emergency preparedness. Start with the following websites:
  • Ready http://www.ready.gov Click on Ready America for the Department of Homeland Security's resources.
  • Are You Ready Guide http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/ FEMA's in-depth guide to emergency planning and response.
  • Disaster Services http://www.redcross.org/services/disaster/ Information from the American Red Cross. Look at the "Be Prepared." "Disaster Safety," and "After a Disaster" sections.
  • Natural Disasters and Severe Weather http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/ Emergency preparedness information from the Centers for Disease Control.
  • Ready Virginia http://www.vaemergency.com/ From the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
  • Emergency Information http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/ Fairfax County's online resources.
  • Emergency Preparedness Guide http://www.novaregion.org/index.asp?nid=184 From the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. Available in six languages.

Step 4: Use the material. Read it and take notes. CITE YOUR SOURCES!!! Use the forms in the Library Learning Center in Blackboard or go to Citing Sources in the Hughes Library website.

Step 5: Synthesize the information: Prepare and present the skit, poster, power point, song, poem, or other approved product. PREPARE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Step 6: Evaluate: Does the paper you wrote answer the essential question. Have you met the requirements for the assignment?
