Pathfinder: Emergency Preparedness

Step 1: Define your task: Look at the assignment/essential question.

Step 2: What materials might be useful for the project? Articles in Online Databases, Websites.

Step 3: Find the material.

• Websites: There is a great deal of information on the Internet about disaster planning and emergency preparedness. Start with the following websites:
  • Ready http://www.ready.gov Click on Ready America for the Department of Homeland Security's resources.
  • Are You Ready Guide http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/ FEMA's in-depth guide to emergency planning and response.
  • American Red Crosshttp://www.redcross.org/ Roll the mouse over "Preparing and Getting Trained" for a list of topics. Click on the topics that might be useful. "Prepare: Home and Family" is probably the place to start for the Emergency Plan assignment.
  • Natural Disasters and Severe Weather http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/ Emergency preparedness information from the Centers for Disease Control. Click on the type of disaster. Click on the links for specific information.
  • Ready Virginia http://www.vaemergency.com/threats/index.cfm/ From the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Click on the type of emergency. Click on the links for specific information.
  • Emergency Information http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/ Fairfax County's online resources. Click on "Prepare" for specific information about things you will need to do to prepare for a disaster.
  • Northern Virginia Regional Commission http://www.novaregion.org/index.aspx?nid=184 Emergency preparedness information for Northern Virginia residents in six languages.
  • LifeInsurance.org http://www.lifeinsurance.org/safety-insurance/ Links to sites with information on preparing for a variety of emergency situations.

Step 4: Use the material. Read it and take notes. CITE YOUR SOURCES!!! Use the forms in the Library Learning Center in Blackboard or go to Citing Sources in the Hughes Library website.

Step 5: Synthesize the information: Create the disaster plan.. PREPARE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Step 6: Evaluate: Have you met the requirements for the assignment? Will your disaster plan be useful in your home?
