Pathfinder: Jane Addams and the Hull House Movement

Step 1: Define your task: Look at the assignment/essential question.

Step 3: Find the material.

• Suggested search terms: child labor, tenements, settlement houses, Jane Addams, juvenile courts, labor law, early childhood education
• Books about Jane Addams: 92 Add in FCPS libraries or Bio Add at the public library.
• Biographical Encyclopedias: Look in the 920s in reference and the general collection.
• Encyclopedias: World Book Encyclopedia: R 030 Wor. R
• Online Encyclopedias include basic information about many people. Use the suggested web links for more information.
  • Grolier;s Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia American and
  • Worldbookonline WorldBook Advanced provides access to primary sources.
• Online Databases: Gale’s Student Resources in Context and Biography in Context include information about many individuals. ABC/CLIO is a good source of biography of individuals of historical significance.
• ebooks (use the eTable of Contents and the search feature to find information):
  • Dictionary of American History
  • American Decades
  • American Decades Primary Resources
  • UXL American Decades
  • Encyclopedia of Children and Childhood: In History and Society
  • Gilded Age and Progressive Era Reference Library
  • Try some of the many ebooks in the history, biography, and social science sections of the Gale Virtual Reference Library.

Step 5: Synthesize the information: Prepare and present the skit, poster, power point, song, poem, or other approved product. PREPARE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Step 6: Evaluate: Does the project address the essential question? Have you met the requirements for the assignment?
