Pathfinder: Biomes

Step 1: Define your task: Look at the assignment/essential question.

Step 2: What materials might be useful for the project? Books, Encyclopedias, Online Encyclopedias, Websites.

Step 3: Find the material.

Books with information about cells have been placed on a cart.

• Books about biomes can be found in the 577s. Ours have been pulled and placed on a cart.
• Macmillan’s four part biology encyclopedia has an entry on most biomes (R 570 Bio)
• The World Book Encyclopedia has entries on most biomes. R 031 Wor
• The Encyclopedia Americana has short articles about most biomes.

• Encyclopedia of Environment and Society Short articles about each biome.
• UXL Encyclopedia of Biomes Extensive information about each biome.
• Marshall Cavendish ebooks Great overviews of biomes.
• Biology (Macmillan Reference USA, 2002) includes information about biomes.
• McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology includes articles about most biomes.
• UXL Complete Life Science Resource includes short articles about most biomes.
• Jungle A Dorling Kindersley book.
• Desert A Dorling Kindersley book.
• Arctic and Antarctic A Dorling Kindersley book.
• Seashore A Dorling Kindersley book.

Subscription Databases:

• Grolier’s online encyclopedias and World Book Student Use these resources to look up articles about countries or regions in specific biomes, including Siberia, Alaska, Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territory in the Tundra.

• Gale’s Student Resource in Context and Science in Context Use these sources to find newspaper and magazine articles about biomes. Search by specific biomes. Search "tundra not toyota" to exclude the many articles about the Toyota Tundra.

Websites:

• The World's Biomes from the Universit of California Museum of Paleontology. Overviews of most biomes.
• Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World from National Geographic.
• worldbiomes.com A website on biomes approved by the National Science Teachers Association.

Step 4: Use the material. Read it and take notes. CITE YOUR SOURCES!!!

Step 5: Synthesize the information: Prepare and present the skit, poster, power point, song, poem, or other approved product. PREPARE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Step 6: Evaluate: Does the paper you wrote answer the essential question? Have you met the requirements for the assignment?
