Last weekend, some students from Langston Hughes MS competed at the State Championship Tournament for FIRST LEGO League (http://www.vadcfll.org/index.html) at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. All brought home trophies for their work.
Team Vector 67 was awarded the ultimate honor--to represent VA and DC at the World Tournament in April in Atlanta, if Virginia is awarded one of the 85 international slots.
Three girls from Hughes competed on Team #5361, Hakuna Matata. They won second place in the state for Teamwork, Division II. Division II is for kids ages 9-14; Division I is for kids 9-11. They advanced to the State Tournament after winning the Champion's Award (first place overall) at the Regional Tournament held Nov. 8 at Franklin MS in Chantilly. The team also includes a seventh-grader from Franklin MS and a seventh-grader from Herndon MS.
Team members Natalie Schauer and Amaani Sirajuddin are seventh graders at LHMS. Priya Seetharaman (LHMS eighth-grader) acted as the team's Junior Coach and played an important role in their success. FYI, Priya was given an FLL Volunteer Award plaque at the Regional Tournament at Forest Edge ES Nov. 15 in honor of the tremendous amount of time she devoted to mentoring a Forest Edge FLL team as well as Hakuna Matata.
