      TI-83 (or higher) graphing calculator and 4 AAA batteries
      A compass and a protractor (to be kept at home)

Inexpensive Calculator or, if taking advanced math to include Algebra 1 or Geometry, a TI-83 should be purchased.  NOTE:  You may want to wait and see what your child's mathematics teacher requires.
