21st Century Community Learning Center: Holmes Middle School

With the assistance from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, Holmes Middle School continues to provide valuable services to students, families, and community through successful after-school and summer programs. The goal of these programs is to provide a safe, structured environment where students can be enriched academically, culturally, athletically, and behaviorally.

In addition to successful after-school clubs such as flag football, basketball and soccer, just to name a few, funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant has helped Holmes develop partnerships with four community-based organizations, Volunteer Fairfax, Boat People SOS (BPSOS), Overseas Pan-Korean Center (OPKC), and the Center for Multicultural Human Services (CMHS). These organizations provide tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment programs for the students, parents, and families. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant has given Holmes the opportunity to provide GED and ESOL classes to all interested adults in the community. Additionally, Holmes now offers support and services to Vietnamese and Hispanic parent groups that meet monthly. Many people are taking advantage of classes for their personal development. Holmes’ goal is to continue to provide these valuable services to the community for as long as possible.
