Hollin Meadows Math & Science Focus School
Welcome From Our PTA President
Hello Friends, and welcome to another year at Hollin Meadows Math and Science Focus School. From its curriculum, administrative leaders, teachers, and students, HM is one of the best schools in the nation.
Hollin Meadows is supported by an active and effective PTA. This didn't happen overnight, but through the diligent work of parents across our community, including those with children no longer at HM. I'm thankful for the work in the past, because we need a great organization to face the future.
We face challenges as a school and community to keep our school at the top. Three primary goals have been put in place by the PTA Executive Board to address some of these issues.
Address Math and Science Focus Funding at Hollin Meadows: For the last several years, Fairfax County School Board has indicated that our math and science focus funding is at risk. These funds enable us to implement cutting edge programs that make HM a unique place. Studies show that math and science skills are critical to our students' future success and this nation's competitiveness.
Therefore, we will begin to implement a federal, state and local strategy on funding while pursuing corporate grants and giving programs to sustain science and math programs for now and the long-term future.
Increase Father involvement at Hollin Meadows: According to the New York Times, only 1 in 10 of PTA members are Dads. However, students whose fathers are highly involved at school are 43% more likely to receive A’s. These same children are 55% more likely to enjoy school than those with uninvolved fathers.
Three fathers now serve on the PTA Executive Board, so we're off to a good start. But we will also develop some flexible programs geared for "Dads" to participate.
Develop a Parent Center at Hollin Meadows: A real jewel of HM is its diversity. This means we have a multitude of talents and skills to share with each other. This year, PTA will help launch a parent center to provide resources such as computers, information on country services and other educational information a parent might need. Additionally, the center will be a "welcome place" for parent's to gather and discuss homework or other things we all face.
We need your help by joining the PTA and actively participating in these initiatives to keep HM as one of the best schools in the nation.
