Congratulations to 8th Grader Katya Mendez for her award winning essay about her relationship with her mentor, 7th grade Science teacher Ms. White. The award was given by the Fairfax County Partnership to recognize all of those in FCPS who work in the Mentorworks program.
Check it out! Get your copy of Herndon Middle's Literary Magazine, The Draft. See the artwork and writing pieces that your friends submitted.The magazine looks awesome, you will love it. All eighth graders will receive them as a "graduation gift" from Mrs. Klena, and next year you will too.To get your own copy this year, place your order along with $5.00, using the attached form. It should be turned in to Room 239, Ms. Highberg.
Congratulations to the HMS Performing Arts Dept. and all the people who put so much time and effort into making "The Wizard of Oz" such an amazing production!
On June 8th the HMS PTA will be sponsoring an after school party for 8th graders! The party will be in the cafeteria and will be from 3:00 to 5:00. The entrance fee is $5.00 and late buses will be provided. There will be food, games, photographers, and a DJ!
The May 2012 edition of "The Hawkeye" is now available!
The HMS 5K on May 12th was a smash! Thank you to all who contributed their time or donated. Over 100 runners participated to raise money for the Josh Anderson Foundation. Take a look at the video of the event.

HMS Jumpstart will begin August 6th! Jumpstart is a great way for rising 7th graders to get the skills and information that will help them be successful at HMS. Complete this form to register now!
Important Notice about Final Exams: The majority of classes do not require cumulative final exams. However, a few do. High school credit courses (Algebra, Geometry, and Foreign Language) and Science 7 (because there is no SOL for this course) will be administering final exams during the week of June 4th. The schedule will not be altered to accommodate these exams. Please contact your child's teacher(s) if you have specific questions relating to final exams.

The HMS Reading Rally was a smashing success! An estimated 12,000 total pages were read by HMS students and over 500 children's books were collected through the Milk and Bookies program!
Free computers for HMS students! Students in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program can apply for Cox internet access in their homes for only $10.50 per month! HMS will review requests and obtain parent permission. Special thanks go out to Gene Gaines of the Virginia STAR program and After School Program Director Mike Thomas for their hard work in making this possible.
