Class of 2018 Welcome Letter

Greetings from Mr. Barr, Assistant Principal (en Espanol)

Important Information

Our Homecoming Week festivities are October 6-October 10.  During spirit week, our outstanding Leadership class will plan fun events such as themed-dress days, friendly competitions during lunches, a pep rally, and a bonfire.  We will participate in the Town of Herndon’s parade on Saturday morning, October 11; this year’s theme is “Carnival” and we will need plenty of help from you to build our class float!  Our homecoming football game is on Saturday, October 11, at 1:30pm vs. Edison HS.  To conclude this exciting week, our homecoming dance will be on Saturday evening, at 7:00pm.  We hope to see you at all of these activities!

Float Building

All right Class of 2018 families we are ready to go!  We have our build site -- Thank you Janssen & Walters families.  We have our flatbed lined up -- Thank you Tammy Bane for connecting us with former HHS Grads Steve Waters & Tim Holdaway of Cavalier Logistics and a BIG thank you to them for donating truck, trailer & driver for the parade.  And our freshman council has some great design ideas for our float.  Soooo...  now all we need is your student ...and you.  As with most things, in four years, when our students are seniors, they will be doing most of the float work themselves.  However, as they are learning building techniques and painting skills, having a few extra parents on hand would be helpful!

Build dates have been set up for each Saturday between now & Homecoming (September 20, September 27 & October 4) from 9:00AM to 12:00PM at the Janssen/Walters houses 1210 & 1212 Cameo Ct, Herndon.  Mr. Barr will be picking up some supplies to get things started on the 20th, but we need our families to assist with some donations as well.

The following is a list compiled by our freshman council:
*Cardboard, cardboard, cardboard (and more cardboard!)
*A couple of 2 x 4s
*Lots of paint and painting supplies....it can be $ store quality because a lot of the brushes get so messy, you can't clean them out. Colors: red, black, green, yellow, white, blue
*Plastic food containers - used to hold small amounts of paint and/or mix different colors
*Staples/staple gun - preferrably heavy duty  Several are a huge help
*Gorilla glue

*Duct tape - because it holds everything together
*Banner for the side....can be a roll of paper, plastic table clothes that the kids cut into strip
*Thank you sign on the back of the trailer for all the Sponsors
*Walgreens Poster lights/Jansen lights
*Red foam footballs
*Cheap plastic basketball hoops
*6 small foam basketballs
*Basketball long nets
*Balloons with and without helium
*Support for cardboard dart
*Big dart
*25 Coke bottles for ring toss (giant food store)
*Pool rings (target)
*Sparky paint for coke bottles ( red and black)
*Spinning Wheel: tube, cardboard for spinning wheel,
*Construction paper
*Glitter
*Milk bottles from party city or oriental Trading
*Tarps - for the night before in case of rain/mist/dew
*Step ladder for people to get up and down off the trailer (will be needed for assembly, night before/morning of parade)

Liz Janssen,kurtlizjanssen@cox.net will coordinate the collection of supplies.  General construction materials (cardboard through duct tape), we can use all we can get, feel free to just bring it with you when you come to build or contact Liz if you need to drop it off at another time.  For everything listed after that, please coordinate with Liz so we don't wind up with too many duplicates.   Donations to purchase some of these items would be appreciated as well.

We look forward to seeing you and your students -- any amount of time is appreciated -- and remember, in order to ride on the float during the parade students must have participated in part of the design/build of the float.

Go Hornets!!
