Parents - Help Needed May 15th!

Parents!  Medication Pick-Up Info
Please be sure to pick up all medications from the clinic before the end of school on June 17. Over the counter medicines may be picked up by the student at the end of any school day.

Varsity Dance Team Auditions
Beginning this coming Monday, May 19th, varsity Dance auditions will be held in the HHS cafeteria starting at 3:00pm.  They will run each day at the same time and place through the 22nd.  Anyone who is interested but missed out on the earlier interest meeting should contact the coach, Rachelle Aiken, at rachnjas@yahoo.com.

Prom - May 17th - Ticket and Permission Info Here
Students must have completed permission form in hand when purchasing Prom tickets.  Students may download the permission forms, pick up permission forms from the 11/12 Grade Offices, or pick them up in the cafeteria during lunches this week. All guests (non-HHS students) must have a guest permission form filled out and signed by their school officials.  The guest form can be downloaded here.

Tickets will be on sale during all lunches beginning Monday, April 28, and will cost the following:

  • $60 if student purchases ticket from Monday, April 28 through Tuesday, May 6
  • $65 if student purchases ticket from Wednesday, May 7 through Friday May 16

No tickets will be sold after Friday, May 16th.  Tickets will NOT be sold the day of prom.

All juniors and seniors are invited to attend the After Prom party.  They do NOT have to attend Prom to go to After Prom. After Prom only tickets are $5

Reality Store Comes Back to Herndon
Once again, all Seniors will be participating in the Reality Store this year. Sponsored by Northwest Federal Credit Union, the Reality Store is a financial literacy exercise/workshop that is designed to be an interactive experience for students to understand the financial impact of the decisions made in the course of everyday life.  Members of the Credit Union work with our Senior Class members during their Government Classes   Following is the schedule for the government classes participation.

Mayfest is Coming May 19th!
On Monday May 19th, the entire student body will be participating in Mayfest carnival from 1:30 pm - 3:00. In the back parking lots and fields, there will be booths selling food, relays, and various activities and games. We will also have the Hot 99.5 radio station at the event with DJ Sammy, playing music and giving away prizes from the Hot 99.5 Hummer, such as concert tickets and free passes to theme parks. Congratulations, Michael Sagan!
Michael Sagan has been named a Presidential Scholar by the US Dept of Education.  He is one of 139 outstanding American high school senior that have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and service at school and in his community.  Only one young man and one young woman are selected from each state, the District of Columbia, and from US families living abroad as well as 15 chosen at large and 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

Join Youth Council!
The FCPS Safe & Drug Free Youth Section are looking for teens (rising 9th, 10th, or 11th graders) to be a part of the Youth Council. Christopher Harold
received the Glen McCarthy Guitar Award at the Mid Atlantic Guitar Festival held at Westfield High School. Mr. McCarthy is credited with starting Guitar classes in the Fairfax County Public School system. Each year, one Guitar student from each high school with a Guitar program is honored with an award in Glen McCarthy's name.

Family Connection Now Active!
FCPS is pleased to announce electronic parent access to Family Connection, the comprehensive web site that students and their families can use to help make decisions about post-graduation education and career choices.

Family Connection is linked to Counselor's Office, an FCPS service for tracking and analyzing data about college and career plans that provides up-to-date information specific to each school.

Parents may now view their students' information through their FCPS 24-7 Learning Account. If you do not have a Parent View account, you may register by going to http://fcps.blackboard.com. Login using the following information: Username: parentreg, Password: newuser.  More details here.

Sports Physicals - June 4 at HHS
The HHS Athletic Training Program will be hosting the Annual Sports Physical Night fundraiser on Wed June 4th from 6-8:30 pm. Physicals are good for the entire 2008-09 school year.  The cost will be $40 for those who pre-register  and $50 for walk in registration (pre-registration is strongly recommended).  Proceeds benefit the HHS Athletic Training Program which serves all Herndon teams.  Physicals will be scheduled for the following time slots: 7, 7:30 and 8.

Herndon High Honor Code
Please take a look at the Herndon High Honor Code of Integrity here.  There have been many questions about what the Code is all about and what defines plagiarism, cheating, etc.  The Honor Code page also outlines the consequences of violating the Code. This information was presented to the HHS faculty and PTSA in January and will be presented to all students during SR&R review. All students will be required to sign the Code. There are many ways that high school students can volunteer their time to help others. HHS Partners with Herndon United Methodist Church (HUMC)

For several years, HHS and HUMC have been official partners that work together for the betterment of the student population and in support of local charities. Here are some of the endeavors ongoing currently.

Art Exhibit - Artwork from Eileen Murphy's Art I class (mixed media:  pen, pencil, markers and water color) and Keith Naquin's computer graphics class is now on exhibit at HUMC. Check it out!

Tutoring Sessions
- HUMC offers FREE tutoring in many subjects, including chemistry, physics and biology and different levels of math, as well as some languages.  Sessions run from 7-8 every Wednesday. Questions: Contact Sarah Steel (sarahsteel@allstate.com)
