Building on the fact that Herndon High
School and Herndon United
Methodist Church are physical neighbors,
the two entered into formal partnership in September
2002. Adhering to Fairfax County Public Schools
guidelines for such partnerships, the two collaborate
in a variety of areas and have the betterment of the
student population and the support of local charities
as their mutual goals.
Partnership activities include, but are not limited
to the following~
HUMC provides
- Home-baked goods for
a number of HHS events
- Free tutoring for HHS students
on Wednesday nights
- Avenue for the award-winning
Dance Team and Step Team to practice in the HUMC gymnasium
- Provides opportunities for HHS groups to raise funds by serving as
sponsors of dinners at HUMC on Wednesday nights
- Encourages parishioners to register HHS as beneficiary of grocery-rebate
programs
HHS provides
- A variety of musical performances
at the church during the year (guitar, jazz band, and
vocal groups)
- SGA-initiated activities with HUMC preschool
children
- SAGA support of the church paper-recycling
program
A steering committee, comprised of representatives from
both organizations, meets three times a year, in an effort
to review partnership activities and discuss ways in
which the two can help one another during the academic
year. Contact the church for more information - office@herndonumc.org or (703) 707-6271. |
