Virginia Standards of Learning Tests General Info
The SAT I is an apptitude and reasoning test that is used by most
colleges for admission purposes and is usually taken more than once.
The SAT II are tests given in subject areas (Math, English, History,
etc) and are used by many, but not all schools. Research schools
of interest to determine whether SAT IIs are recommended. The SAT
I is usually taken more than once. Up to three SAT II tests may be
taken at one time.
The ACT is another test that is widely used in the college admission
process. It is more closely tied to course related knowledge. If
a student has high grades and SAT I scores are lower than expected,
the ACT can be considered in place of the SAT I for college admission.
Sample Testing Sequence: For
the college bound student the sequence of testing should
be planned in advance to allow for reporting of scores to colleges
of interest, particularly if the student plans to take advantage
of early admission procedures. The timing of the tests will vary
with each student but the following sequence is provided as a starting
point:
-
PSAT - Fall 10th/11th grades
-
SAT I - Winter or Spring 11th and again as desired
-
SAT II - Towards the end of 11th Grade (June) to
allow for end of course work. May take up to three tests at a time.
-
AP testing will occur in May of each year for those
students enrolled.
-
SOL testing generally occurs in May.
-
Retakes of SAT I and II early fall of 12th Grade
to accomodate the application process.
