  • ACT - American College Test (also offered at HHS every available session)
  • Advanced Placement Exams - APs General Info

  • TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language**
  • SOLs - Virginia Standards of Learning Tests General Info

The SAT I is an apptitude and reasoning test that is used by most colleges for admission purposes and is usually taken more than once. The SAT II are tests given in subject areas (Math, English, History, etc) and are used by many, but not all schools. Research schools of interest to determine whether SAT IIs are recommended. The SAT I is usually taken more than once. Up to three SAT II tests may be taken at one time.

The ACT is another test that is widely used in the college admission process. It is more closely tied to course related knowledge. If a student has high grades and SAT I scores are lower than expected, the ACT can be considered in place of the SAT I for college admission.

Sample Testing Sequence: For the college bound student the sequence of testing should be planned in advance to allow for reporting of scores to colleges of interest, particularly if the student plans to take advantage of early admission procedures. The timing of the tests will vary with each student but the following sequence is provided as a starting point:

  • PSAT - Fall 10th/11th grades
  • SAT I - Winter or Spring 11th and again as desired
  • SAT II - Towards the end of 11th Grade (June) to allow for end of course work. May take up to three tests at a time.
  • AP testing will occur in May of each year for those students enrolled.
  • SOL testing generally occurs in May.
  • Retakes of SAT I and II early fall of 12th Grade to accomodate the application process.
  • If 11th grade SAT I scores are disappo October 15, 2009 ourse over the summer break and register for the SAT October test date.

**TOEFL Registration information - The test is given two times a day (7:30 am and 11:00 am), six days a week at George Mason University. Call 703-993-2390 to schedule a time. The fee is $130. Students have a maximum of four hours to complete the test on a computer. There is an essay portion that may be taken handwritten. On test day a score will be given to the student that does not include the essay portion. Essay scores will be provided later with handwritten essays taking longer to score. 300 is a perfect score. Examples of scores required for admission are 210 for Virginia Tech, 230 for George Mason, 250 for George Washington and American Universities. Tutors are available for a fee at GMU (call 703-993-3660). A practice booklet is available in the Career Center.
