Building on the fact that Herndon High School and Herndon United Methodist Church are physical neighbors, the two entered into a formal partnership in September 2002. Adhering to Fairfax County Public Schools guidelines for such partnerships, the two collaborate in a variety of areas and have the betterment of the student population and the support of local charities as their mutual goals.
Two of the most successful (and longest-standing) services provided HHS students by HUMC are refreshments for the quarterly HHS Honor Roll receptions and tutoring through T.G.F.T. [Thank God for Tutors]. The church provides free tutoring from 7-8PM for students seeking help with all areas of Math and Science subjects Wednesday that school in session. Students need only bring their textbooks and work assignments with them! Contact info: email@example.com or call (703) 707-6271.
Partnership activities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Home-baked goods for a number of HHS events
- Free tutoring for HHS students on Wednesday nights
- A venue for the award-winning Dance Team and Step Team to practice in the HUMC gymnasium
- Provides opportunities for HHS groups to raise funds by serving as sponsors of dinners at HUMC on Wednesday nights
- Encourages parishioners to register HHS as beneficiary of grocery-rebate programs
- A variety of musical performances at the church during the year (guitar, jazz band, and vocal groups)
- SGA-initiated activities with HUMC preschool children
- SAGA support of the church paper-recycling program
A steering committee, comprised of representatives from both organizations, meets three times a year, in an effort to review partnership activities and discuss ways in which the two can help one another during the academic year.
The Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated its 16th year of partnership with Herndon High School. The highlight of the partnership is our annual Ethics Day where students interact with business professionals at the Fairfax County Government Center and debate major ethical situations faced in the workplace.
Herndon High is proud to announce a partnership with the Dulles Hyatt that was signed by Fairfax County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Alan Leis, then Herndon High School Principal Jan Leslie, and Hyatt Dulles General Manager Jim Deuel in May 2001.
