PROGRAMS

The Greater Herndon Community Coalition (GHCC) has established the following programs for the 2008-2009 school year.

ROAD DAWG Camp- the Coalition assisted in providing volunteers for the 2008 summer ROAD DAWG (Don't Associate With Gangs) camp. Began in 2004 at the West Springfield Police Department, the ROAD DAWG Camp is designed to enhance existing leadership skills in the kids chosen.  Daily activities challenge the children to work as a team, build self-esteem, respect each other and make good decisions. Herndon Middle School After-School Program -the Coalition will support the After-School program at Herndon Middle School through program ideas and contacts. Contact- Mike Thomas, Charles.Thomas@fcps.edu

Hispanic Parent Programs at Herndon - The Coalition will help support the Hispanic Parent programs at Herndon High school . The programs will focus on increasing the protective factors in our youth through Parenting Tips, Drug & Alcohol awareness, Internet Safety, understanding the school system, and more. SGA/SCA Peer-A-Mid Summit – the Coalition will work with the Leadership class at Herndon High School to host a Peer-A-Mid Summit in spring 2009. SCA leaders from area elementary schools and the middle school will be invited, along with their sponsors to Herndon High School . The program will feature a discussion on a popular topic and idea sharing amongst the various students. Contact - Lisa Lombardozzi, 703.973.4444, lisalombo@signaturecos.com .

Teen Risky Behavior Awareness Parent Program – the Coalition will assist in presenting a Teen Risky Behavior Awareness program to parents at one of the PTSA meetings this school year to be held at 7 pm.  Contact - Lisa Lombardozzi, 703.973.4444, lisalombo@signaturecos.com .

Prom Note-Card Program -the Coalition will work with area elementary school guidance counselors to educate students about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The students will be asked to design a note-card for a high school student who will be attending the Prom that will highlight the dangers of risky behavior. The note-cards will be given to each student purchasing a Prom Ticket in mid-April. Contact-Lisa Lombardozzi, 703.973.4444, lisalombo@signaturecos.com .

After Prom Support -the Coalition will support the After Prom (May 15, 2010) party at Herndon High School. Contact- Laura Medvene, 703.478.6678, LM6687@aol.com.  

All Night Graduation Celebration Support -the Coalition will support the All Night Graduation Celebration (June 22, 2010) at Herndon High School by supplying paper and supplies. Contact- Leslie Petty, 703.450.4372, lespetty@verizon.net.

Kids at Hope - The Greater Herndon Community has been chosen as one of this year's Kids at Hope grant communities awarded by Kids at Hope and the National Recreation Foundation.  All members of the community, who care about our youth and the future of our youth, are invited to participate in the Kids at Hope initiative.  This training will be provided FREE to all who are interested in sharing a vision that we can create a community where all children can succeed, no exceptions.  To download an outline of the program – click here .
