Readers Are Leaders
Herndon Elementary has been fortunate to have been offered a wonderful mentoring program called Readers Are Leaders. Readers Are Leaders is a reading mentoring program founded by Wendell Byrd from the Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services. Mr. Byrd is a retired Fairfax County teacher. The program pairs Herndon High School varsity basketball team members with second graders from Herndon Elementary. The sessions focus on reading fluency, comprehension, word work, and discussion. Readers Are Leaders meets for twelve sessions from 2:30-3:00 in the cafeteria at Herndon Elementary every Wednesday, December 17 through March 18. The program is sponsored by Wendell Byrd, Jonathan Frohm, assistant director of student activities at Herndon High, Chris Whelan, head coach of Herndon High School basketball team, Evelyn Breitbach, reading teacher at Herndon Elementary, and Donna Neil, counselor at Herndon Elementary.

Hive Tutors |
The Herndon High School HIVE tutors or Hornets Interested in Volunteering for Education, work in partnership with the teachers at Herndon Elementary School. The tutors assist elementary age students in a variety of subjects, including Language Arts, science, mathematics, French, Art, music, and PE. Our tutors devote 90 minutes of their time on Tuesday afternoons throughout the year. In addition to the academic benefits the HIVE tutors also build relationships with the children. The tutors and teachers have commented that the elementary school children truly look forward to the personal attention they receive on Tuesday afternoons! What a great way to get kids of all ages excited about learning!
