Important News: Interior Cameras

As you may well be aware by now, Hayfield Secondary School would like to install cameras in our school to support having a safe and secure environment.  We would like to have these cameras located in high traffic areas such as our lobbies and high traffic hallway intersections.

The total cost estimate for this installation at our school is $54,500.  This cost includes $16,500 that our school system plans to pay for infrastructure in addition to $23,000. provided to Hayfield Secondary School through proffer funds based on a new housing development within our community.  This leaves the local school portion to be covered at $15,000. This cost, of course, is a rough estimate but we expect that the amount to be within 20% of the actual cost. There may be minor adjustments to the final cost. A final estimate will be requested from the vendor once permission is granted to move forward.

Hayfield Secondary School will not use any appropriated funds to install the interior cameras.  We will pay for our portion of the cameras using monopole, security, and vending profit accounts.

We have put in considerable time and effort seeking input and feedback from all stakeholders into the process.  We held a formal town hall meeting during an evening event and dedicated time during two PTSA meetings to dialogue around this initiative.  During the second PTSA meeting, the PTSA voted unanimously to support the installation of interior cameras.  Further, we met formally with our Student Government and after a one hour dialogue, our student leaders felt very comfortable with the idea.  We have also met with the entire Hayfield Secondary School staff in order to discuss interior cameras in two capacities.  First, we had an open discussion about the camera initiative during a formal full faculty meeting.  In addition, during our instructional council meeting we discussed this initiative at length.  The results of these activities resulted in faculty endorsement of the initiative.  With all of this said, if you would like to share feedback or clarify any potential questions around the internal camera initiative, please don’t hesitate to email me directly at DSTremaine@FCPS.edu.  Please do so prior to June 1st, 2012.  After June 1st, we plan to gather all of the data that has been collected throughout the school year at which point I will request permission from the Superintendent to move forward on installation.

Please view the “Frequently Asked Questions” for more information.

Once more, please email your comments or questions directly to me at DSTremaine@FCPS.edu.  I’d love to hear from you!

Go Hawks!
