News Highlights

·        Latin Quiz Bowl Competition

·        Debate Team Hosts 88 Schools

At the most recent Certamen competitions (a Latin quiz-bowl style competition), our Latin III team of Ian Reardon and Amanuel Mekonnen brought home a 5th place trophy. The Latin I team composed of Jireh Clarington and Michael Rodriguez also performed well, placing 7th out of many competitors.  The team was led by teachers Irina Greenman and Bethany Phillips

 

Hayfield recently hosted a debate for 88 schools comprising of over 400 students.  The event was planned and facilitated by faculty advisor, Charity Fisher.  Notable performances by Hayfield students were James Ho and Sheldon Pearce who placed 7th out of 88 teams and achieved a 4-0 record with wins over Gonzaga,  Pope Paul V, Dominion, and Walt Whitman High Schools.  Ruth Solomon and Saadia Nawal went 3-1, while Gautam Gupta and Alexis Hingle ranked 32.

 

Lieutenant Colonel (US Army, Retired) Joe Spicer, the Senior Army Instructor for JROTC, represented the US Army Cadet Command and Hayfield Secondary at the National Forum on Character Education where he gave a presentation on how Army JROTC encourages citizenship and character education.  Participants were also informed of Hayfield's "HAWKS SOAR" program.

 

The Wingspan, Hayfield's 2009 Literary and Art Magazine, was rated first place in the Virginia High School League Journalism Competition.  Erik Ingeman served as editor (class of 2009), Marisa Mendez as co-editor (class of 2009), and Angelica Verdan as Art Director (class of 2010). Mary Prunchak was the adviser.
