The following students were chosen to serve on the 2006-07 Homecoming Court: 9th grade Meghan Monroney and Rashaud Westbrook; 10th grade Sydni Robinson and Patrick Davis; 11th grade Amanda Godfrey; Teri-Yae Yarbrough; Robert Easton and Robert Shropshire; and seniors Marie Celeste; Terry Hasty; Jenni Watson; Stephen Ayres; Nick Nations and Neal Sweeney.  Jenni Watson and Neil Sweeny were chosen as the homecoming queen and king.

 

Jamie Biggs, Matt Jewell, Seth Perrin, and Lindsey Swansen participated in the Virginia Honors Choir auditions at Longwood University in Farmville.  More than 800 seniors participated.  Among these, Lindsey Swansen and Matt Jewell were chosen to participate as members of the 132 person state choir which will perform as part of the Virginia Music Educators Association Annual Conference in November.

 

Roy Hill, wrestling coach, was chosen by the Virginia High School League as a Regional Award of Merit winner.  The wrestling team has won five of the last six regional titles.  He was nominated for the award by the Northern Region principals and athletic directors.

 

High school chair of physical sciences, Bob McMillan, recently won a $9600 grant from the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association to pay for new planetarium lighting. The new lighting will provide students with a more accurate view of the day and night skies without interference from inclement weather.  Students will be able to see what the sky above their own home looks like today, in the future, and in the past.

 

Led by team captain Adam Becker, the JROTC team finished second overall at the tri-state regional competition and won the “first aid/litter carry” event.  Team members included Christine Boyd and John Goodwin who earned individual honors as the fastest female and male runners on the physical fitness test.  Other participating members include Trent Gordon, Corey Bell, Ben Hall, Alexandra Bring, Ben Hall, Alexander Bring, Justin Goodnow, Bannet Muhoozi, and Jonathan Pham.

 

Middle school English teacher, Denise Williams, has been motivating her students to read outside school with her “Teens Read” program.  One of her most ambitious student, Alex Exstein, read 2790 pages during the first quarter.
