Recently, Hayfield’s Latin students participated in the Flint Hill School Certamen, the latest in an ongoing series of classical trivia competitions this year. The Level I team of Amanda Smith, Dennis Aviles, and captain Sydni Robinson, brought home a 7th place trophy in a difficult field of competition, breaking into the top third of the teams present on Level I. Finishing 10th was the Level II team paced by a solo effort from  Anders Bruce. The Level III team consisting of Justin Kirkland and Alexander Olihovik brought home an 8th place trophy, placing in the top half, and the Level IV/V team made up of Leanne Hanson, Lindsey Swansen, Chris Kenedy, and Ben Henkel brought home a 5th place trophy, placing in the top third.

The Hayfield It’s Academic team led by Sue Duncan successfully defended its Patriot District title by remaining undefeated in all seven rounds of the tournament.  The team also placed second in the Northern Region, beating all FCPS, Arlington and Alexandria teams except Thomas Jefferson.  The team, led by captain, David Loss, and consisted of Nabil Hassein, Ben Henkle and Laura Murray and Samantha Dodbele. Because of their accomplishments, the team has been invited to compete for the State title in February at William and Mary.

Hayfield was well represented at the Cluster 5 Reflections contest. The contest built around this year’s theme of “My Favorite Place,” allows students to express their creativity in a variety of categories. Winners were:
