Yearbook editor Theresa Poquis and Hayfield’s newspaper advisor, Marge Craig, went to the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association convention in Nashville where the newspaper, “H2N” finished 9th place for newsmagazines around the country.

 

Recently Hayfield's Latin Club participated in a Certamen competition which is an “It's Academic”-style classical trivia quiz bowl competition.  Level I, consisting of Amanda Smith, Dennis Aviles and team captain Sydni Robinson brought home 8th place honors. The Level II team made up of David Trimarchi and team captain Anders Bruce, brought home 8th place honors. The Level III team consisting of Justin Kirkland and captain Laura Murray, earned 5th place medal honors. Students on the Upper Level, consisting of Leanne Hanson, Chris Kenedy, and captain Ben Henkel brought home 5th place medal honors.

 

At the recent Virginia Junior Classical League Convention in Richmond, Hayfield Latin students brought home a grand total of over 25 state-wide awards on five levels of academic competition. Jonathan Fetterolf won a Level I, received 7th place in Latin Vocabulary, 5th place in Roman History, and 2nd place in Latin Derivatives;  Dennis Aviles earned a Level I, received 8th place in Latin Derivatives and 2nd place in Latin Vocabulary, and was a member of the 5th place Certamen team; for Level I Sydni Robinson received 10th place in Omnibus (a test which combines History, Mythology, Grammar, Derivatives, and Vocabulary), 6th place in Classical Mythology, 4th place in Roman Life, and was a member of the 1st place winning Certamen team; on Level II Anders Bruce finished 7th place in Latin Derivatives; Will Grayson for Level II was on the 4th place Certamen team; Justin Kirkland, Level III, was on the 1st place winning Certamen team; at the Level III level Laura Murray was 6th place in Latin Derivatives, 5th place in Reading Comprehension Advanced Prose, and was captain on the 1st place winning Certamen team; Chris Kenedy at Level IV received 9th place in Latin Derivatives, 8th place in Latin Literature, 3rd place in Latin Grammar, and 2nd place in Reading Comprehension Advanced Prose; for Level V Lindsey Swansen was selected through audition as a finalist for the That's Entertainment musical and talent show. Finally at Level V Ben Henkel received 10th place in Classical Mythology, 3rd place in Ancient Geography, 2nd place in Latin Literature; defended last year's championship to bring home 1st place in Roman History, and earned a new 1st place championship in the Pentathlon (combination of History, Mythology, Grammar, Derivatives, and Vocabulary). These awards combined to an achievement of 8th place Overall Achievement among seniors present at the Convention.

 

The Hayfield Cosmetology Skills USA club has collected 200 pounds of personal items--phone cards and snacks for US soldiers in Iraq in particular for Lieutenant Adam Nestor, a 1998 graduate of Hayfield, and his unit.
