Between 1990 and 2000, the population of K-12 students learning English as a second language in U.S. public schools doubled from 2.2 million to 4.4 million according to the Office of English Language Acquisition in the U.S. Department of Education. (For information about the ESOL program in Fairfax County Schools click here.)
Hayfield Elementary School has approximately 45 students who participate in the English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. There are 35 different languages spoken here. We have students who speak Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Creole, Farsi, French, Korean, Pashtu, Portuguese, Russian, Slovic, Spanish, Somalian, Tagalog, Tamil, Turkish, Twi, Urdu, and Vietnamese to name a few. While impressively diverse, we maintain the philosophy that "We All Smile in the Same Language!"
Classroom teachers, specialists, and ESOL teachers work collaboratively on academic, social and cultural issues essential to the students' progress. The ESOL teachers provide instruction in language arts and in the content areas. They serve as a resource on linguistic and cultural diversity issues for the staff.
Our ESOL program is based on pull-out and inclusion, depending on the level of the ESOL student and their individual needs.
