Sara Hawkins, Art Specialist
sara.hawkins1@fcps.edu

We assume that each student has a natural creative ability that can be nurtured through knowledge about and appreciation of the world of art as well as through individual creative problem solving.

To this end, Hayfield Elementary will provide an environment that:

• builds on individual differences, offering a challenge to each student regardless of individual ability or cultural background.

• provides positive sequenced learning opportunities in the disciplines of artistic study to all students.

• provides and promotes imagery that develops positive self-image, attitudes and life directions.

• provides a variety of means by which students may express themselves and in the process, discover their own uniqueness and self-worth.

hawkHayfield Elementary Art

Hayfield Elementary School's art program is based on the assumption that that a sound art education is a fundamental part of the total education of each child who passes through our school. Art education at Hayfield is a core discipline, essential to the growth and development of the creative and expressive mind of all students. It has its roots in the disciplines of artistic study: art production, art history, art criticism and aesthetics.*

Through instruction in all four of these disciplines, the curriculum will provide opportunities for all students to:

• recoginize the role and importance of art and artists in society, culture, and history.

• critically assess works of art from many aesthetic and cultural perspectives.

• express their own ideas and feelings.

• think visually and creatively.

•enhance their self image.

*As stated in the FCPS elementary Art Program of Studies
