Who was William Halley?

Several decades ago, William Halley rebuilt Lorton School after it burned down. He used wood from his own mill on Rt. 123 and some he had brought in from North Carolina. He valued education and when the school burned, he rebuilt it so the children in the area could continue to receive an education. Then, once the little school was built, he could regularly be found riding around in his truck picking up children who needed a ride there. He put a bench in the back of his truck and drove the children to school. His son eventually became a bus driver and in those days, the teacher was picked up by the bus. The teacher became his wife and they lived on the Halley property north of Halley on Rt. 123 for many years. The son's home was torn down to widen Rt. 123 but William Halley's home has been renovated, purchased by another family and is still inhabited. When our new school was going through the naming process, a Crosspointe resident and his son researched old county records looking for a local person deserving of this honor. They found William Halley, presented it at the naming meeting, and it was immediately accepted, as it seemed a perfect fit. The Halley family was very appreciative and donated his pocket watch to the school. This pocket watch is displayed in the school office to this day.
