Students and teachers in grades kindergarten through second grade meet together in the cafeteria each morning from 8:45 - 9:10 a.m. for Morning Program. During this short program, students sing songs, say the pledge, share information about the date and weather, hear the lunch menu, and celebrate birthdays. We also have special presentations with stories, poems, songs, or art by the lead class or invited guests.
Halley's Morning Program builds a sense of community within the school because of its "inclusive" design. Through a variety of activities, students are encouraged to share in group activities as well as individual ones. It allows the students to meet all the staff members throughout the year. We promote positive feelings about our school and community.
Students are rewarded for demonstrating our school motto (Be kind to yourself and others. Allow others to work and learn.) as well as monthly character traits with a bookmark from "star searchers" or by earning the Good Character Award on Friday. Our school focus on character education each month is encouraged by visits from the More Family puppets ( Ann's Campaign) and Benedict Egg. The character traits are color-coded representing the blending of all character traits to make the rainbow leading to the pot of gold for good character.
Every day is unique and
truly a great way to start the day!
Ann's Campaign
The life of Ann Marie Harris was taken by a random act of violence in the spring of 1997. Her family is working to turn this tragedy into a campaign for kindness. Halley incorporates this campaign into their Kindness and Justice Campaign sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. family during the month of January. For more information about Ann and this campaign visit the website at www.annscampaign.org
More Family Puppets
Margaret Fisher, Morning Program Coordinator, created a set of puppets to use as a visual reminder of Ann's Campaign. The family members are: Susie Smile More, Carl Care More, Lila Love More, and Bea Understanding More
When students asked about parents, she designed Katrina Kindness More and Jacob Justice More. They go hand in hand to demonstrate the traits given to their children.
Terry Tolerance More is a cousin who joined the family to show tolerance and patience.
Super Character "Izzy" Integrity reminds us that this character trait is the one which guides us toward good character.
