Library Mission

The mission of the William Halley Elementary School Library Media Center is to "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." (Information Power, ALA. 1998). To accomplish this, the library media center collection consists of print and non-print materials covering a variety of interests at varying reading levels. The collection is current, balanced, and addresses Virginia Standards of Learning and Fairfax County Public School 's Program of Studies. Students are provided instruction to use reference and non-fiction materials to do research, and are exposed to a variety of activities designed to foster enthusiasm for reading.

Using the Online Catalogue

The I-Bistro On-Line Catalogue allows you to search the collection of any Fairfax County Public Schools. At the top of the screen you will see "Quick Search" and "Power Search." The screen is set up for you to use the "Quick Search" mode, so there is no need to click one of these buttons, unless you want to do a "Power Search," which is described below.

To search the Halley collection, be sure that the Library (to the right of the screen) says "Halley," or the school you wish to search. Simply use the up or down arrow to select the school. In the "Type Word or Words to Search For" box, type in the title, author, or subject in which you are interested. Then click the brown button under the box that correlates with your search. This will take you to a list of books that fit your search criteria.

Clicking the "everything" button will search the titles, authors, subjects and descriptions of the books. This is handy when you know a word is in the book somewhere, but you aren't sure of the title or author, and the word may not be the subject.

The "Power Search" button at the top of the screen allows you to do a more complicated search using the Boolean operators and, or, and not. For example, you might type in "Whales" AND "Dolphins" NOT "Fiction." This will limit your search to books with both whales and dolphins that are non-fiction. Remember to click on "Halley" at the bottom of the screen. Search the On-line Catalogue

Recycling

Help save the earth by recycling used ink and laser cartridges and old cell phones. Just drop them off in the library or the front office (attention: Library), and they'll be sent to the Funding Factory. For every cartridge or phone we return, Halley gets points toward technology. Click the icon for more information.
