Events
Magicadabra – magic show (Friday, September 25)
Bring your whole family for dinner and a show at Gunston Elementary School. Volunteers are needs for show and food ticket sales, serving food, collecting tickets at the door, set-up, and magic kit sales.
BINGO Nights
It could be your lucky night! Join in this fun family event and maybe even go home with a prize! Volunteers are needed to sell BINGO cards and concessions. Halloween Bingo- Friday, Oct. 30 Valentine Bingo Night –Friday, Feb.12
Holiday Sing-a-long/Cookie Night (December 16th)
There is no better way to spread some holiday cheer, then spending an evening singing and eating cookies with our Gunston family. Volunteers will be needed to make and distribute refreshments and cookies after the sign along. Help setting up the cookies will also be needed.
Science Fair (March 25th)
This event is all about the kids! Come see the creative display boards, experiments, and models. Our kid creators need adults to ensure the evening goes smoothly!
Fun Fair (June 18th)
One of the most anticipated events of the year, Gunston’s Fun Fair! A fun filled evening for all Gunston Families. Have a blast with the moon bounce, cotton candy, games, prizes, junk tank, and much more. Volunteers are needed for one hour shifts to sell raffle, food, and dunk tank tickets, help serve food, run games, set up/ clean up, and help organizing the event.
Fundraisers
Sally Foster Gift Wrap Sale (Sept.- Nov.)
The sale of Sally Foster gift wrap is the PTA’s primary fundraiser. Children are encouraged to sell to family and acquaintances, not go door to door. The sale takes place in September and purchases distributed in November. Volunteers are needed to tally orders and help with distribution.
Spirit Wear
Show your Gunston Elementary School spirit by wearing one of our great school t-shirts / sweatshirts. Help is needed with a sales table at a variety of events during the school year.
Holiday Gift Shop (Dec. 9-Dec. 18)
There is no better joy than to watch children shop for others. Come and help students pick out gifts for the ones they love. Volunteer to work the gift shop when students shop, fill orders, or the night of the Sing Along.
General Mills Box Tops / Campbell’s Labels
Volunteers are needed to assist in the collection and tallying of box tops and labels. These two companies GIVE US MONEY when we collect and return the box tops and soup labels to them.

Safeway / Giant Buying Clubs
Every purchase you make at Safeway or Giant means money for our kids. Sign up online or in the stores to participate in this program. Be sure to use your club cards when you check out so your purchase is included in our tally! You MUST renew registration EVERY school year.

During-the-School-Day PTA Jobs
Room Parents
Volunteers are needed from each class to serve as room parents responsible for coordinating activities as designated by the teacher. Assistance will be needed with coordinating volunteers throughout the year for your class.
Classroom Helper
You’ll be coming back for more once you see the thankful, smiling faces of the kids and teachers! There is always something to do in a classroom ranging from working with kids to ‘behind the scenes’ preparation, such as making copies, cutting out pictures, hanging art work, and putting up bulletin boards.
Teacher Appreciation
Volunteers are needed to help coordinate two teacher appreciation luncheons during the school year. Assistance is needed creating filers asking for food donations, receiving food on the day of the lunch, set-up and clean-up.
Kindergarten Lunch Volunteer (Sept. 8th – Sept. 18th)
First two weeks of school, Mon 11:00-12:00 / Tues.-Fri. 11:25-12:10. The first few weeks of school, kindergarteners need help selecting food in the lunch line, opening milk, condiment packets, and finding their seats.
Library Volunteer
Help to re-shelve books that the children have returned. This job can be done any time of the school day. Volunteers are also needed at the annual Book Fair in November. Please contact Diana McIntyre, the school librarian, with any questions.
Hall Monitor
This important job is very fun and relaxing. Come spend an hour or two sitting in the hallway with a good book or magazine, while you make sure the halls stay quiet during testing.
Gunston Partners Tutoring Program at Pohick Episcopal church
Gunston Partners Program helps our students succeed in learning. Children come to Pohick Church in Lorton on Tuesday nights at 7:00 to get help with their school subjects. Your commitment to one hour a week makes a difference in the education of these students. The children appreciate the tutor’s commitment and love seeing them every week.
Picture Day (October 2 and March 12)
This twice a year event needs you. Help make Gunston’s students look their best by smoothing hair, encourage smiles, and place classes where they belong. Be the Photographers assistant for the day.
After School Program (October 6th – November 17th)
What a fun way to spend a Tuesday after school with the lovable students of Gunston. This program teaches our students fun activities like Legos, dance, karate, art, foreign language, and more. If you have a special skill or would like to spend time working with our students, this is a volunteer opportunity for you.
Reflections
This national PTA sponsored program encourages student to enter original projects in the arts. Entries are judged and honored at a reception and winners participate at higher levels. Volunteers are needed to help with publicity, visual arts displays and the reception.
