Project 3: Comparing Art Forms

3. What conclusions can be drawn about world cultures by comparing and contrasting art forms?

Points to consider:

  • What are the similarities and differences in one kind of art form from other cultures you have studied this year.
  • How has art of one culture influenced the art of another culture or on the art of today.
  • Think about art ?

VISUAL ARTS

•  Two-dimensional - (Painting, calligraphy (writing), textiles/fabrics, murals)

•  Three-dimensional - (Buildings/architecture, masks, crafts, dolls, games)

PERFORMING ARTS

•  Music (vocal and/or instrumental)

•  Dance

•  Theatre

Project Suggestions:

Select two or three cultures you have studied this year.  For each culture find three or more examples of an art form, such as architecture, instrumental music, and dance. Compare the art forms. How are they different? How are they the same? Do they borrow from each other? How are they connected?

After you have completed an Art Forms Data Retrieval Chart for each piece as a guide for note taking, complete a Venn diagram or create your own chart to compare and contrast the art form in the different cultures.
