Self-Portraits Students create a self-portrait that tells something about themselves and a favorite place they visited at some point in their life. |
Seasonal Tree Paintings Students studied the different seasons they experience in their community. They then choose a specific season and painted a beautiful tree during that season. |
Weavings Learning to weave and incorporating patterns turned into a fun and creative lesson for kindergarten. |

“Up Up and Away!” Paintings Students were inspired by hot air balloons and a story they wrote about a balloon ride. They painted a birds eye view painting to illustrate their story. |

Emotional Trace Monotype Students studied body language and facial structure in different emotions. They took pictures and used their images to create a trace monotype using block printing ink.

Observational Tree Drawings Students used an observational drawing approach to draw a tree at the same time and place as their classmates. We were pleasantly surprised to see so many different interpretations of the same subject matter.

Scraffito Emotion Trees Students used their observational drawings as a jumping off point to create a more abstract and emotionally charged tree. They used oil pastels for color and scratching tools for texture in their composition.

Changing Landscape Paintings Students will create an illustration in a painting of a landscape in a certain area of the world that is being transformed by nature in some way. I hope to incorporate technology into this unit, by using the Photo Story program when we approach it. |

Distorted Self Students use photographs of themselves to distort and abstract certain features of their face. They use pencil to shade and add value. |
Self-Portrait Paintings Students study the shapes that make up the body and create a painting of themselves. |

Emotional Self-Portrait Sculptures Students used recycled cardboard found around our building to create a bust of themselves showing a particular emotion. Texture was so important in this assignment to create a visually pleasing sculpture. |

My Buddy and Me Drawings Students discussed how to show depth using overlapping. They drew themselves and a friend in a place they have a fond memory of. |

The Greenbriar East PTA in partnership with the Greater Reston Arts Education program bring an artist to life for our students each month. The PTA works to create a project that has been inspired by a selected artist. They discuss the artists life and artwork and then create a great lesson and display of student artwork in the cafeteria. The GRACE program is a fabulous supplement to our art program here at GBE! |

Self Portraits Students created a self portrait using cut paper that expressed an emotion. They learned the proper proportions and placement of facial features. |
