Introduction

You are a botanist who is interested in exploring the seasonal changes of leaves and trees. You will be working in class and at home. You will be using books and the internet to help you find your information. Your biggest source of information will be nature itself.

Get ready to continue exploring nature and learn about leaves and trees. We have learned about deciduous trees and now we will be taking a look at the world of evergreens. We will review deciduous trees and discover evergreens while making comparisons between the two.

The Task

We will start by focusing on fall and then move through winter and spring to explore the following:

  • life needs and functional parts of plants;
  • characteristics of plants including edible or nonedible, flowering or nonflowering, evergreen and deciduous(trees that lose their leaves in winter);
  • needs of a plant;
  • plants are a natural resource and that they are important to all life.

Evergreens

We will explore the following links in class.

At Home Activity 1

Trees in Winter

Go to the above link and follow the directions for the outside activity at the very beginning of the page. Do not do the other activities. Bring your drawings to school to share.

At Home Activity 2

Trees, Trees, Trees

We just learned about deciduous trees. Use the above link to name another type of tree. How is this type of tree different from a deciduous tree? Write this information down and bring it in to share with the class.

 Trees:

Be a botanist at home with your parents. Use the following link to explore trees and do projects at home.

We will be working on our evergreen activities through December and January. The "At Home" activities will be collected as homework. We will be using this page in class also. As always, remember to do your best work.

Conclusion

You have just begun your work as a botanist, so keep on using our page for fun and exploration.

Watch for new activities as the seasons change!
