Post Office in Great Falls

The Post Office on Walker Road may look like a normal post office but there is a lot of history behind it! From 1878 to 1917 the Great Falls area was served by two post offices because delivery was difficult. Some of the houses were far apart. Before cars people would have to walk or ride a horse to visit the post office. The Springvale Post Office was torn down. The Deanwood Post Office building is still standing across from Chez Francoise. It is a log cabin.

From 1917 to 1959 Great Falls was divided into two parts. One part was served by Rural Route 1, Vienna and the other was served by Rural Route 2, Herndon. Cars made it easier to deliver the mail from distant post offices.

On November 15, 1959 the Post Office was moved into the Old Schoolhouse. It was there until 1978 when the post office was moved to its present location in the Village Center. Some people hope there will be a larger post office built to allow more room for sorting the mail.

If you want to mail a letter to your friend far away, you can go to the post office. There you can buy stamps. There is even a stamp machine! From the Great Falls Post Office your letter will eventually end up in the hands of your friend!
