The Old School House

The school house, located off Georgetown Pike near the grange and library, was completed in 1889. It was a one room school that until 1916.The school had one teacher for all the students in grades 1-8. When the teacher was busy with some grades, the other students had to work on their own. Not only did the teacher teach all the grades, but had to come early to build a fire in the stove! The students usually walked to school. They had to bring their lunch since there was no cafeteria. If you got hurt, they would send for a doctor. The teachers were pretty strict, but some boys still dipped the girl's hair in the ink well.

After the building closed as a school, it was used as a home, post office, and a bank. Today some groups hold meetings there. Children in Great Falls now go to a school with many more conveniences than they had at the old school house. They even have electricity!
