Art

Graham Road is home to a plethora of young, aspiring artists! Students at Graham Road work very hard in their art classes to achieve objectives and to create art that expresses their own creativity.

It is very important that all students experience success in the visual arts. Students learn step by step techniques to create art in a variety of media. Students work in printmaking, ceramics, painting, drawing, sculpture, and collage to create their artwork.

In the art room, students make many connections to math, science, social studies and language arts. It is important to the staff at Graham Road ES to bring student classroom learning full circle into the specialist classrooms such as the art classroom. I strive to help students grasp the subjects taught in their regular classroom by reinforcing subjects through art in an attempt to reach all learning styles.

Art education in Fairfax County Public Schools is a core discipline, essential to the growth and development of all students.

The sequential art curriculum for grades Kindergarten through twelve is based in the four disciplines:

•  art production
•  art history
•  art criticism
•  aesthetics

The curriculum is designed to develop content knowledge and skills in the following areas:

•  recognition of the role and importance of art and artists in society, culture, and history
•  critical assessment of art works from aesthetic and cultural perspectives
•  creative problem solving
•  technical processes
•  personal expression through art production.

Art instruction in Fairfax County Public Schools provides an environment which offers challenges to all students, builds on individual differences, and provides means by which students may express themselves and develop positive self concepts.
