About the Library

We pledge our support to make this school the very best that it can be. We will continually strive for new and exciting ways to work with you and your students in a creative approach to the learning process. Student learning is enhanced when a quality library program is in place. We look forward to working with you and your students this year.

Hours and Circulation

The library opens at 7:00 am daily, and closes at 3pm. The Library Office Assistant will be in the Library until 4pm every day. Students may check out materials until 4pm with a pass. Please do not send students to stay in the library after school without supervision as we have many clubs, teachers, and others meeting in the library after school already. Teachers are welcome to come to the library at any time - call first (ext. 8738) if you want to be sure that one of us is here.

Please remember that everything (books, magazines, videos, etc) must be checked out at the circulation desk. Materials are checked out to teachers for a 3-week (videos are 2 weeks) period, but they may keep materials as long as they are needed. If you are sending a student to the library to get something for you, please send your request in writing. Materials for a particular assignment may be put on reserve at the discretion of the classroom teacher.

Students are issued library cards when they enroll at Glasgow, and the cards are good until they leave Glasgow. Library cards are kept at the library circulation desk. Students may check materials out for 2 weeks, and may renew if necessary. Overdue notices are printed every Tuesday and are delivered to English teachers for distribution. There are no fines, but students are billed for lost or damaged books.

Class Use

Teachers must sign up in advance with one of the librarians to bring their class to the library. The library can handle two classes at a time depending upon the nature of the work that the students are doing, and size of the classes.

Individual Student Use

Students are welcome to use the library for study, research, recreational reading, or to purse individual interests during the day. Written passes from a teacher are required at all times during the day. Passes should include the following information: student's name, date, time, work to be accomplished while in the library, and teacher signature (not initials).
The student will be responsible for returning the pass to the teacher at the end of the period. We will be happy to sign the pass for them to return to you. We request that each teacher send no more than 3 students on passes at one time. If you need to send more than that, please discuss it with one of the librarians. Students who do not exhibit appropriate library behavior will be sent back to class.

** Due to the fact that the Library has new upholstered furniture, food, drinks and gum are not permitted in the Library during or after school.

Materials

Our library provides extensive resources for students and teachers. The collection includes over 18,000 books, and access to over 2000 magazines and newspapers, either in print or online. The Library purchases several online databases: Proquest, Big Chalk, Electric Library, SIRS and Grolier Online. These databases are available online anywhere in the building as well as from home. Accelerated Reader testing is available from the server on most computers in the building. Most of our fiction collection is part of the AR program. We also have a small professional collection dealing mainly with broad topics currently under study at Glasgow.

Faculty Inservices

The Library staff always wants to acquaint teachers with current materials, especially the large amount of electronic references sources. Inservices, as well as individual tutorials, will be offered to accomplish this goal.

AV Equipment

All AV equipment is checked out by Marc Perella, in the Library annex, with the exception of video cameras, which can be checked out in the Library. Basic equipment (tv, vcr, overhead) is checked out to each room. . A small amount of equipment, including cassette recorders and digital cameras, will be available for checkout as needed. Please do not move this equipment from room to room without telling Mr. Perella. As repairs are needed, equipment (except mounted tvs) should be brought to Marc Perella in the library annex with a note stating the problem. If an overhead projector bulb burns out, please check the machine for your OV number. Send a note to the library requesting a replacement bulb and we will send you a new one.

Video Tapes and Video Disks

Materials from the Fairfax County School Film Library must be ordered through the Library Office Assistant and returned to the library by 2:30 on the date due. Teachers who miss the deadline may have to hand carry their own films to Chapel Square. The film catalog is available in the library, and soon be available online. Films from rental or commercial sources must be ordered and returned by teachers directly.

Off-Air Videotaping (downloading)

Email Mr. Perella with your downloading requests. All requests must be submitted at least two days in advance. Cable listings are available online. Please be aware of copyright restrictions when making requests.

Laminating

A laminator is available in the library for staff use. Before using the laminator for the first time, please see a member of the library staff for a quick overview.
