Glasgow After School Academy

Glasgow Academy is designed to provide Glasgow students with instructional support, enrichment and intramural fun in a safe and nurturing environment from 2:40 to 4:10 p.m. on Mondays, and from 2:40 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students may enroll in a wide selection of courses and activities twice a year during the two sessions of the Academy. Wednesday team homework sessions and selected clubs will continue between Academy sessions and for a short time after the Academy ends.
Glasgow Academy’s mission is to help all Glasgow students achieve and aspire in a college preparatory atmosphere after school.

Glasgow Summer Academy

Glasgow’s Summer Academy includes one- two- and four-week enrichment classes.

In addition to classes, the Academy offers:
*Summer Stars - a four-week session that provides extra help in reading and math with a focus on drama and art for rising 6th and 7th graders.
*ESOL Advantage – a four-week session designed to strengthen English acquisition through continuity in instruction for selected rising 7th and 8th grade ESOL A-level students.
*IB Institute – a two-week preparatory session (by invitation only) to encourage students who are not registered for pre-IB courses but show the potential to succeed in the International Baccalaureate program.
PLEASE NOTE: Summer program information is subject to change.

University Programs

*Week at Marymount University – A week at Marymount gives selected students the chance to spend time on a college campus and learn through hands-on activities about the connections between higher education and the world of work.
The week at Marymount generally takes place two weeks after school closes for the summer. Transportation and lunches are provided. Letters to selected students will be sent home in the Spring.
*George Mason University Visits – Each year, Glasgow’s seventh-grade students get a tour of George Mason University, including a question and answer session with student tour guides and lunch on campus.

Workshops for Parents

In partnership with George Mason University and the FCPS Center for Promoting Family Learning and Involvement, GEAR-UP sponsors a series of workshops for parents on topics selected by parents through an interest survey.

The 2003-2004 school year began with a well-attended workshop on understanding the middle school child. Included in the series will be a workshop on financial aid and college admissions in late winter/early spring. Remember to check this site for a list of workshops and dates.

George Mason University also provides sessions on tutoring middle school children for parents and other community members interested in working with Glasgow students during the day in school reading programs, after school during the Academy, or in the evenings at a library or other public meeting place.

*Open Door Nights – a series of informal get-togethers hosted by Glasgow’s Spanish-speaking liaison and representatives of the Hispanic Committee of Virginia designed to provide information about Glasgow, the school system in general, available health and social programs, and to answer questions from newly-arrived immigrants concerning housing, banks—the logistics necessary to become established in a new country.
