In a new “Listening and Learning Tour,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has been engaging Americans across the country in a conversation about education and federal policy. In a preliminary stop, last month the Secretary visited Glasgow Middle School to talk with thirty instructional leaders, teachers, parents, and students about the school’s focus on creating a respectful and dependable environment for learning. We welcomed Secretary Duncan’s entourage, national media, and members of the FCPS Leadership Team to an hour-long discussion of the school’s approach: using the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program as a flexible framework for developing principles and practices that promote a school culture of responsibility and positive engagement. Glasgow parents, teachers, administrators, and students participated in the discussion held in the school library.

In a “Back to School Town Hall Meeting,” Secretary Duncan later cited Glasgow as a good example of Fairfax County’s strong commitment to maintaining safe and drug-free schools. The U.S. Department of Education archives the Secretary’s conversations on his tour of America as webcasts available from www.connectlive.com/events/ednews.
