Welcome to our Garfield Elementary School website! We are excited and pleased to share information about our fine educational community.
Located in downtown Springfield, Virginia, Garfield was built in 1952 and has been renovated twice. Our school embraces a richly diverse cultural population and is dedicated to providing a high quality learning environment for all. Each child at Garfield is given the opportunity to meet success and prepare for the future.
Given time and appropriate instruction, all children can learn, but it takes a whole community to make a significant impact on the lives of children. At Garfield, parents, teachers, community members, and the student themselves work together to create a unique educational environment. Emphasis is placed on literacy, hands-on experiences, character education, developing critical thinking skills, working cooperatively, and practicing cultural sensitivity. We are extremely proud of receiving the Virginia State Reading Association Exemplary Reading Program Award in the year 2000. It is an honor to be recognized nationally for our efforts in literacy. Other accomplishments include an outstanding music program; the establishment of before and after-school remediation, enrichment, and cultural classes; and the completion of our Model Tech initiative. Indeed, at Garfield, we celebrate our community of independent and caring life-long learners! |
We envision a school in which, through interdependent collaboration, we cultivate independent and responsible life long learners.
- We exist to provide a safe, nurturing, student-centered learning environment. This will strengthen our partnership among parents, community, and school as we continue our journey toward becoming a Professional Learning Community.
- We will know we have accomplished our mission when we have met our learning objectives, and we have active family participation, after-school clubs, business/community partnerships, and volunteers.
- Our plan for students who are not meeting current county, state, and federal standards is to identify these children at risk and provide interventions necessary for them to succeed.
- We will identify students who are meeting the above standards and provide enrichment and extension activities.
