Advanced Academic Resources

Advanced Academic Resource school-based programs in the elementary and middle school are designed to match the learning abilities and developmental levels of identified students and to support their unique personal and social needs. School-based Advanced Academic Resource programs are located in every elementary and middle school.

Students are considered annually for Advanced Academic Resource services. Parent and staff referrals of students may be considered at any time. The local school identification/placement committee considers school achievement, test scores, and teacher recommendations and ratings .

The K-3 school-based program offers a series of Response Lessons in critical and creative thinking for all students. Students who exhibit characteristics of emerging giftedness are considered for differentiated services within their regular classroom. These services are specifically planned for the identified child and offer changes in the child's instructional program that provide more challenging content, alternative resources, activities, assignments, and/or instructional groupings.

The 4-6 school-based program offers a series of Process Lessons to all students to increase their critical- and creative-thinking skills. The school- based program offers a weekly session with a gifted and talented resource teacher to students identified by committee review. Expansion of critical- and creative-thinking skills as well as training in creative problem solving is provided in these weekly sessions.

More information on Advanced Academic Resource services in FCPS is available on the FCPS Advanced Academic Services website.

Speech & Language

The Speech and Language program at Fort Belvoir Elementary School serves children in grades Kindergarten through grade six who primarily reside on the Fort Belvoir Army Post. This program is designed to meet the needs of students with mild, moderate, or severe oral communication disorders in articulation, language, voice, and fluency. The Speech/Language clinicians' responsibilities are as follows:

  • Provide articulation, language, voice and fluency screenings for all students new to Fairfax County Public Schools.Administer Speech/Language Program approved tests to individuals identified through the screening process.Participate in school local screening committee meetings and provide evaluations as requested.Provide a written individualized education program (IEP) for each student found eligible for the Speech/Language Program.
  • Implement IEPs.

The Speech/Language clinicians, in cooperation with the classroom teacher(s), other therapists, specialists, and parents, establish the goals and objectives to meet the child's communication needs. Therapeutic activities are carried out primarily, rather than solely, by the speech/language clinicians, with carry-over and general communication activities being provided by all educational staff.
