FORT BELVOIR DOLPHINS
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Our Physical Education staff consists of three full-time teachers and one part time adaptive PE teacher to assist with special needs students.

The primary purpose of the elementary physical education program is to enable elementary school children to develop competence in fundamental movement skills by providing a wide variety of developmentally appropriate experiences and practice opportunities. (The primary purpose of the middle school curriculum is to provide greater opportunities to apply these skills in more traditional activities.)

The basic format which we utilize to assist in accomplishing our goals at the elementary level is the Skill-Theme Format. Every week during the school year, we will utilize a theme from one of four categories--Body Management and Transport, Throwing and Catching, Striking With Body Parts, and Striking With Implements-- in order to provide opportunities for the children to accomplish these goals. Generally, we attempt to revisit the same themes throughout the year. Some of the specific themes may be listed according to the four categories:

Body Managment and Transport
Throwing and Catching
Striking With Body Parts
Striking With Implements
  • Traveling
  • Chasing, Fleeing, Dodging
  • Rhythms and Dance
  • Tumbling
  • Balancing Jumping and Landing
  • Effort Skills
  • Relationship Skills
  • Jump Rope
  • Locomotor Skills
  • Overhand
  • Underhand
  • Sidearm
  • Passing
  • Catching
  • Kicking
  • Punting
  • Dribbling a soccer ball
  • Dribbling a basketball
  • Volleying
  • Long-Handled
  • Short-Handled

Furthermore, we incorporate fitness, multi-cultural, and cooperative activities into these themes. We look forward to serving you and your children throughout the school year.

FORT BELVOIR'S GYMNASIUM RULES

1. Always move safely..

2. Be a good listener.

3. Respect everyone and everything.

Dressing for PE

All children in grades K through 6 participate in Physical Education at Fort Belvoir Elementary School. School Board Regulations require children to wear athletic shoes designed to provide support and prevent injury. Platform sneakers, heelys/wheelys, high-heeled fashion sneakers, and backless slip-on sneakers are not considered to be athletic shoes. Children who forget their athletic shoes may not participate and will have to sit and watch their class. Wearing the proper shoes is one factor reflected in grades 1-6 quarterly report card Effort Grades in Physical Education. In order to help children remember when they will need to wear athletic shoes, please check with the child's classroom teachers for days children have PE.
